It might have been a roast for then-Senate Minority Whip Bob Griffin (D-Mich.), but it was Sen. Hubert Humphrey (D-Minn.) weathering the brunt of the joke in this April 1976 photo.

The roast, put on by the Saints and Sinners club, put Griffin in the hot seat before 800 guests, all men. Humphrey, members of Griffin’s staff and a Michigan comedy team all took aim at the longtime legislator. But Griffin got to return some of the fire in Humphrey’s direction.

Here he playfully wrings the former vice president’s neck as club President Barney Breeskin, himself in the midst of the 1976 presidential primaries, holds a sign poking fun at the unsuccessful 1968 Democratic nominee for president.
