Guess: 1842 or 1942?

Yes, it’s a horse-drawn bus, and, yes, motorized automobiles have been in mass production since the 1920s, but the above scene was not uncommon in the early 1940s, when this photo was taken. Because the country was facing a fuel shortage, tourists visiting Washington, D.C., often were relegated to horse-drawn buses when they sought transportation around the city. The Capitol was among the buses’ frequent sightseeing stops.
