Gard Poll Has Him Closing in on Kagen

Former Wisconsin Assembly Speaker John Gard (R) released a new poll Friday showing he is within the margin of error in his rematch against Rep. Steve Kagen (D-Wis.).

The Public Opinion Strategies poll showed Kagen leading Gard, 46 percent to 42 percent, among 400 likely voters surveyed July 8 and 9. The poll had a margin of error of 4.9 points.

In their 2006 race, Kagen defeated Gard, 51 percent to 49 percent despite the district traditionally voting for Republicans. Kagen put in a hefty amount of his own funds into the race.

Kagen ended June with $927,000 in his campaign account compared to $649,000 for Gard.

The poll also showed Gard with a high name identification of 88 percent with voters. In a presidential match up in the district, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) led Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), 46 percent to 41 percent, with 12 percent undecided.
