Denver: More Than the DNC

On behalf of the city and county of Denver, we would like to welcome delegates, media and visitors alike to the Mile High City to witness history unfold at the Democratic National Convention.

Against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, there is no better place to celebrate the promise of our nation’s future.

We are excited to have this unique opportunity to showcase Denver to the world for this momentous event in our nation’s history.

Not only will this convention nominate the first African-American for the highest office in the land, but it will also be the greenest convention to date and set precedent for all conventions to follow.

When we embarked on the task of hosting a national convention, we put into place a number of programs and events to make this the most memorable and forward-thinking convention in recent history.

Our goal was to engage the entire community and allow for widespread public participation. We seized the opportunity to make this more than a convention, and turn it into a thought-provoking, high- impact experience for the community, allowing them to define democracy for themselves and get people excited about participating in the democratic process.

Events planned to engage the residents of Denver include:

• Cinemocracy.org, a film festival of shorts based on defining democracy

• Dialogue:City, 10 commissioned artists working with local organizations to spark dialogue around the question, “What does democracy mean to you?”

• Symposia of the Rockies, a series of substantive issues discussions with high-profile experts

• The American Presidential Experience, an exhibit that is a public display of politically themed and interactive exhibits and vendor booths occupying 40,000 square feet of space at Invesco Field at Mile High.

Additionally, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama’s decision to host his acceptance speech at Invesco Field at Mile High will help us achieve our goal of opening up the convention to as many people as possible.

We expect the speech will spawn even more excitement, as 60,000 residents will have a chance to see Obama accept his party’s nomination for president of the United States firsthand.

However, the DNC is not all Denver has to offer this summer.

We invite and encourage you to take advantage of the many amenities and excitement that attracts so many people to Denver each year. There is no shortage of cultural and recreational options, as the Mile High City boasts a variety of attractions, including the 10-theatre Denver Performing Arts Complex and myriad shops, restaurants, parks and outdoor recreation opportunities.

From the 16th Street Mall pedestrian promenade to one of the largest urban park systems in the nation to the Denver Art Museum’s amazing new expansion, your options are endless.

Welcome to Denver. Have a safe and wonderful stay, and come back soon.

Sincerely,
John W. Hickenlooper
Mayor
