Poll Shows Kilroy Still Leading Stivers, but Not by Much

State Sen. Steve Stivers (R) is within striking distance of Franklin County Commissioner Mary Jo Kilroy (D) in Ohio’s hotly contested 15th district open-seat race, according to recent polling data.

A SurveyUSA poll taken Aug. 2-4 showed Kilroy ahead 47 percent to 44 percent. Anti-abortion activist Don Eckhart, running as an Independent, garnered 7 percent. Two percent of respondents were undecided. The poll, paid for by a Columbus TV station, questioned 567 likely voters and had a margin of error of 4 points. Past public polls showed Kilroy with a greater lead over Stivers.

This is Kilroy’s second bid to win the seat. She lost to Rep. Deborah Pryce (R), who is retiring, by about 1,000 votes in 2006.

National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Ken Spain said the poll shows Stivers’ campaign is on the right track.

“It appears that Steve Stivers’ campaign has gained significant traction in a matter of weeks,” Spain said. “His message of changing Washington, lowering fuel costs and fiscal responsibility stands in stark contrast to Mary Jo Kilroy’s record of pay-to-play tactics.”
