Pelosi Says She Nixed McCain’s Bailout Meeting

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said she rebuffed Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain’s (Ariz.) bid to inject himself into negotiations on the $700 billion bailout package.

Pelosi said McCain called Wednesday to invite her to a meeting that he was organizing because he said “nothing was happening” and “no progress was being made” on the rescue package.

“I said, ‘well Senator, I have good news for you. Quite a bit has been done,’” she said. “I don’t see any reason to come to a meeting based on a premise that nothing is being done because plenty is. We’re moving in a forward direction. We’d like to keep on our path to get that done.”

The Speaker said she didn’t know “if you’d call that partisan, but it was — he thanked me for accepting his call.”
