Embattled Republicans Gain in Alaska Poll
Embattled Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) and Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) are on the rebound, according to recent poll results.
Young trailed former state House Minority Leader Ethan Berkowitz (D), 49 percent to 44 percent, in the survey of 500 likely voters conducted Sept. 20-22. The Ivan Moore Research poll had a margin of error of 4.4 points.
Its a significant gain for Young, who just emerged from a bloody GOP primary with Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell that was decided by only a few hundred votes. Polling from three weeks ago showed Young trailing Berkowitz by 17 points, 54 percent to 37 percent.
Stevens also appears to be in a close race, trailing Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich (D), 46 percent to 48 percent, according to the same poll.
Stevens began trial this week for not disclosing gifts on his official Senate financial disclosure forms. The most senior Republican in the Senate was trailing by double digits in the polls when the Justice Department announced its indictment against Stevens in July. However, more recent surveys have shown him and Begich within the margin of error.
