Negotiators Want Auto Bill Ready Tonight

Congressional leaders and the White House on Tuesday morning were still working out the kinks in a $15 billion auto industry rescue package. House sources said the two sides plan to work through a handful of outstanding issues today, with a goal of having a final bill ready by tonight. The main sticking point relates to accountability language, those sources said. Democratic and Republican House and Senate staff huddled in Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) office late Monday night going over draft language line-by-line. Aides sent the proposal back to the White House around 11 p.m., sources said. Hill leaders are now “awaiting their response,” said one senior Democratic aide. “Staff says we are not far apart,” the aide said.
