Vilsack Tapped for Agriculture Post

President-elect Barack Obama is expected to nominate former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack (D) to be his Agriculture secretary, multiple news organizations are reporting.

The announcement is expected to be made Wednesday, along with the appointment of Sen. Ken Salazar (D-Colo.) to be Interior secretary.

The names of several Members had been floated as possible picks for the Agriculture post, including House Agriculture Chairman Collin Peterson (D-Minn.) and Reps. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-S.D.) and Jo Ann Emerson (R-Mo.).

Vilsack, who was termed out of office in 2006 after serving for eight years, ran a brief campaign for president this election cycle, but it never really got off the ground. Vilsack then got behind the campaign of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.).
