It was Aug. 28, 1963, and Martin Luther King Jr. had just delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech to the crowd gathered for the March on Washington.

In that speech, King said, “Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice.”
