EMILY’s List Backs Carnahan

National Democrats are lining up quickly behind Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan (D), who announced Tuesday that she is running for retiring Sen. Kit Bond’s (R-Mo.) seat. EMILY’s List said Tuesday afternoon that it is backing Carnahan for the seat. According to a news release from the organization, EMILY’s List supported Carnahan in her 2004 and 2008 statewide bids. “Robin Carnahan has a lengthy and impressive record of public service, and has experience running for — and winning —statewide office,” said Ellen R. Malcolm, president of EMILY’s List. The daughter of the late Missouri Gov. Mel Carnahan (D) and former Sen. Jean Carnahan (D-Mo.), Carnahan was considered Senate Democrats’ top recruit, and her entrance in the race is likely to clear the field. Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman Bob Menendez (N.J.) called Carnahan the best candidate for the Senate race. “Secretary Carnahan’s values of hard work and integrity are values she shares with all Missourians,” Menendez said in a statement. “She will make a superb United States Senator and she will show that to the people of Missouri over the coming campaign.”
