House Puts Kibosh on Pay Raise

The House voted 245-178 Wednesday to pass the $410 billion omnibus spending bill, which includes a provision nixing Members’ cost-of-living adjustment. Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Democratic leaders decided to freeze Congressional pay given the financial crisis. However, the overall bill significantly increases domestic spending on a range of programs, particularly in education, health care and energy, and includes more than 8,000 earmarks costing nearly $8 billion.
