Members Hit the Hustings in N.Y. Special
Members of Congress from both parties continue to lend a hand in the closely fought special election in New York’s 20th district with nine days to go before voters head to the polls.
On Sunday, the youngest House Member, freshman Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Ill.), 27, was scheduled to make three appearances with the Republican nominee in the special election, state Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco.
Schock and Tedisco were scheduled to attend a “Young Republicans— rally at Tedisco’s headquarters in Halfmoon, followed by a visit to a senior citizens center in Queensbury. Tedisco and Schock were then expected to go door-knocking in Saratoga Springs.
New York Democratic Reps. Paul Tonko and Steve Israel were also scheduled to be in Saratoga on Sunday, aiding the canvassing efforts of venture capitalist Scott Murphy, the Democratic nominee. Tonko represents the adjacent 21st district in upstate New York and was also with Murphy and other local officials at a variety of events on Saturday. Israel represents a district in New York City and is seen as a possible candidate for Senate in 2010.
Tedisco will get further help from Capitol Hill when House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) headlines a fundraiser for him in New York City on Monday.
The race to replace now-Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) in the House is considered too close to call. Republicans have the edge in terms of voter enrollment, but Gillibrand’s solid victories in 2006 and 2008, along with President Barack Obama’s narrow victory in the presidential election suggests that the first special election of the year is truly up for grabs.
