Byrd Still in the Hospital

Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) is still in the hospital two weeks after he was admitted for a minor infection, and it remains unclear whether the 91-year-old lawmaker will return to work next week. “Byrd remains in the hospital but is much improved,— a statement released Tuesday said. “His doctors and family want to exercise extra caution before he is released to ensure that the infection has totally run its course.—Byrd was admitted to the hospital on May 15 “as a precautionary measure— after his temperature spiked because of a minor infection. A statement released shortly after Byrd, the Senate’s longest-serving Member, was hospitalized said he “is being treated with antibiotics, responding well, and is expected to be released from the hospital in a few days.—Byrd’s office has not released details on where the Senator is being treated or on the type of infection. The ailing Democrat has been admitted to the hospital a few times over the past year. In June, he also had been treated for a minor infection.Byrd’s health became an issue last year when he chaired the powerful Appropriations Committee. After a strong push from Democratic leaders, Byrd voluntarily gave up the gavel for the 111th Congress. He still chairs the Subcommittee on Homeland Security.
