Byrd Won’t Return to Capitol This Week

Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.), hospitalized three weeks ago for an infection, will not return to the Capitol this week, according to a statement issued by his office Monday.

“Senator Byrd continues to recover from a staph infection in the hospital,— the statement said. “He is not expected to return to Capitol Hill this week but is in daily contact with his staff.—

The release noted that Byrd received well wishes from the outgoing class of Senate pages, as well as from Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), who has also been absent from the Senate as he continues to receive treatment for brain cancer.

Byrd, 91, was admitted May 15 for a mild infection, and in the weeks since his hospitalization, the ailing Senator developed a staph infection.
