Democrats Mull Iran Resolution

House Democrats are considering whether to bring up a resolution expressing concern about the situation in Iran amid repeated calls from House Republican leaders to condemn the elections there as a sham.”The first test is to make sure that we do no harm to the brave people of Iran,” House Foreign Affairs Chairman Howard Berman (D-Calif.) said.Berman said he’s spoken with House Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence (Ind.), who has been the most vocal in condemning the regime in Iran for suppressing the media and protests over the announced re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.Berman said he is considering drafting a resolution and a statement on Iran. “But the last thing I want to be involved in is something that gives fuel to the regime,” he cautioned. Some have worried that associating the protesters with American support could backfire.Republican leaders have shown no such worries, urging President Barack Obama to take a hard line with the Iranians.
