Cantor Urges Whip Team to Keep Recess Heat on Health Care

House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) will send a weekly e-mail to the members of his whip team during the August recess to try keep them on message. The recess e-mails, which will be sent out each Monday beginning today, will include key talking points, statistics, schedules and “best practices— tailored for each Member’s district, according to a memo from Cantor’s staff obtained by Roll Call. The first e-mail focuses mainly on health care. It also includes information on the schedules of President Barack Obama and the Senate, as well as a list of dates on when new data on jobs and auto sales will be released. In an effort to combat Democratic charges that Republicans have not yet released a health care bill of their own, the e-mail urges whip team members point out that several House Republicans have introduced legislation. Cantor also tells whip members to cite the reform ideas presented by the Health Care Solutions Group led by Rep. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.).“Many Republicans have their own solutions for needed health care reform in America,— said one bullet point in Monday’s e-mail. “While the White House still does not have legislative text, many Republicans do.— Cantor also encourages Members to call the GOP Doctors Caucus to help them conduct activities in their districts involving local doctors and hospitals. Republicans vowed to try to make the August break a difficult one for Democrats and have launched an offensive to try to cast Democratic health care bills as job-killing proposals that will decrease the quality of care across the country.
