McCain to Vote No on Sotomayor

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Monday announced his opposition to Supreme Court hopeful Sonia Sotomayor, calling her judicial philosophy “anti-democratic.—

In a floor speech, McCain said that while Sotomayor had the qualifications to become a Supreme Court justice and a compelling life story, her record and public speeches indicated she is a liberal judicial activist. McCain, speaking on CNN on Sunday, said he was undecided on the nomination.

Noting his belief in a strict constructionist view of the Constitution, McCain argued that “while I believe she has many of these qualities … I do not believe she shares my belief in judicial restraint.—

McCain, the GOP’s 2008 presidential nominee, went on to argue that Sotomayor adheres to an “anti-democratic attitude— when it comes to the role of the judiciary. He added that she lacks “common sense limitations— and “ultimately lacks a key qualification for a lifetime appointment to the federal bench.—
