Schakowsky to Endorse Hamos in Race to Replace Kirk

Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) will endorse state Rep. Julie Hamos (D) on Friday in her bid for Rep. Mark Kirk’s (R-Ill.) seat. Schakowsky is the first Member to wade into the competitive Democratic primary between Hamos and marketing consultant Dan Seals, who was the party’s 2006 and 2008 nominee. She will make her announcement Friday morning, according to a release from Hamos’ campaign.“I know of no other Legislator more capable of forming effective coalitions and I know Julie Hamos, as a Member of Congress, will have an immediate impact on the work we do here in Washington,— Schakowsky said in the release. Kirk is stepping down to run for Senate in 2010, making his North Shore Chicago suburban district a prime Democratic pickup opportunity. Democrats unsuccessfully targeted the seat in 2008, when the district voted for President Barack Obama with 61 percent.Hamos lives in Schakowsky’s neighboring district, and she donated to her first campaigns for Congress. Online fundraising records also show Hamos donated $1,000 to Seals during the 2008 campaign.
