Obama’s Grass-Roots Team Targets District Offices

Staffers in Congressional home offices who think they’ll be taking it easy during the August recess have another thing coming, as backers of President Barack Obama’s health care proposal prepare to flood local offices.

In a message to his vast e-mail list sent over the weekend, Organizing for America Director Mitch Stewart launched the new “Office Visits for Health Reform— campaign, directing grass-roots supporters to begin visiting local Congressional offices to “show our support for insurance reform.—

The move appears at least partially designed to buck up Members who may be shaken by town-hall demonstrations by opponents of Obama’s health care initiative. Stewart warns that “special interest attack groups are stirring up partisan mobs with lies about health reform, and it’s getting ugly.— He suggests OFA members counter this by showing up at Congressional offices to register support for Obama’s plans.

“Don’t worry if you’ve never done anything like this before,— Stewart writes. “The congressional staff is there to listen, and your opinion as a constituent matters a lot. And if you bring a friend, you’ll have more fun and make an even greater impact.—

Even as Obama aides and supporters charge that anti-Obama anger at the town halls is “manufactured,— Stewart himself seeks to help tailor the message that constituents will bring to Congressional offices.

“We’ll provide everything you need: the address, phone number, and open hours for the office, information about how the health care crisis affects your state for you to drop off (with the option of adding your personal story), and a step-by-step guide for your visit,— the e-mail states.

OFA is a branch of the Democratic National Committee and includes the e-mail list compiled by Obama’s presidential campaign.
