Rep. Ron Kind (D-Wis.) will announce this afternoon that he is not running for governor, according to a report from the Associated Press. The seven-term Democrat’s staff did not immediately return a request for comment but confirmed earlier this morning that Kind would announce his plans this afternoon.Kind has been mulling a statewide bid since mid-August, when Gov. Jim Doyle (D) announced he was not going to run for another term.Kind has already attracted a strong GOP challenger for 2010: State Sen. Dan Kapanke (R) announced in early August that he would run in the southwest Wisconsin district. Kind has always won re-election by comfortable margins, although the district has been competitive for Republicans in the past on a national level.
