“I’m proud to stand with Joe against the Democrat attack machine,— Barrett wrote. “If you agree with my support of Joe, our fight against the Obama big government agenda, and my conservative vision for job creation and economic growth in South Carolina, then make your own statement by making a contribution to our cause today.—

The campaign of Wilson’s Democratic opponent, retired Marine and Iraq War veteran Rob Miller, released its own fundraising e-mail Wednesday asking donors for help to stand up against Wilson’s “shameless grandstanding— in the wake of his media moment.

“Can you believe [Wilson’s] turning himself into a conservative martyr?— Miller campaign manager Lindsay Zoeller said in her appeal. “Your support to this point has put Joe Wilson on the defensive. Can you help us one more time before the fundraising deadline?—
