Pelosi Eyes Thanksgiving for Health Care

Even as timelines for quick action on health care reform in both chambers continue slipping, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said she is hopeful lawmakers can get an overhaul to the White House by Thanksgiving.“I would like to see us have this as a Thanksgiving present for the American people, but it will certainly be this year,— the Speaker told Charlie Rose in an appearance on his show Monday.White House officials have been aiming to wrap up work on the package by that holiday at least since lawmakers returned from their August recess. House leaders have yet to make some of the tougher choices to iron out differences between three committee takes on the measure, and the Senate Finance Committee has yet to approve its version. In the wake of reports that the White House has quietly pushed for a public insurance option in the Senate, Pelosi was bullish on the prospects for the provision in the final package. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the Senate, hearing the public view and why, would move toward a public option, because it saves so much money,— she said. The Speaker pointed to support among some fiscally conservative Blue Dog Democrats for the plan in committee as evidence that those Members have “not been an obstacle.—“The question is, ‘Which form will it take?’— she said.
