Reid to GOP: Floor Time for Cloture

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday pledged to provide Republicans ample floor time to debate health care reform legislation — if the GOP doesn’t try to block the debate from starting in the first place.“If we are able to overcome your opposition to permitting the Senate to even debate this important legislation, all Members will have the opportunity to offer amendments,— Reid said in a “Dear Colleague— letter. “I have no intention of rushing this process or blocking Senators from offering alternatives.— Although Senate Republicans don’t have the votes to filibuster on their own, Reid has characterized them as obstructionists to the Democratic agenda. Reid’s “Dear Colleague— letter was in response to an earlier Senate GOP letter complaining about a lack of transparency by Democrats on health care.Reid said a full text of the health care package would be made available online after the Congressional Budget Office has completed its analysis of various proposals and the Democrats finalize the measure’s language.
