Federal prosecutors called for ex-Rep. William Jefferson (D-La.) to serve up to 33 years in federal prison, according to court documents filed Friday.“The Probation Office has calculated the Sentencing Guidelines for Congressman Jefferson … in a guideline range of 324 to 405 months or approximately 27 to 33 years of imprisonment,— states the sentencing memorandum filed by federal prosecutors.“Because Congressman Jefferson’s crimes against the people of the United States were exceptional in their sheer number, length, and breadth, the United States respectfully requests that this Court sentence the defendant within the applicable guideline range,— the statement continued. “While the guidelines sentence calculated by the Probation Office is lengthy, it is appropriate, in that Congressman Jefferson’s criminal activities have surely caused or substantially added to the loss of public confidence and trust in our nation’s highest levels of government.—A federal jury found Jefferson guilty in August of 11 criminal charges, including conspiracy to solicit bribes, money laundering, wire fraud and a pattern of racketeering activity.The same jury determined Jefferson may have to forfeit up to $471,000, plus additional stock holdings, the income that he received as a result of those criminal activities. U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis is scheduled to sentence Jefferson on Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.Jefferson is expected to appeal his conviction.
