Speier Mulling Statewide Run in California

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) is considering leaving the House to run for California attorney general, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Wednesday.

Speier, who won her 12th district seat less than two years ago, has “no comment— on the report, said Alex Tourk, her 2008 campaign manager who is handling press on the matter.

Speier served in the California state legislature from 1986 to 2006 before winning the special election to succeed the late Rep. Tom Lantos (D-Calif.) in April 2008. She has run for statewide office in the past, losing a hotly contested Democratic primary for lieutenant governor in 2006.

The district, which takes in the western parts of the city of San Francisco and part of San Mateo County, is heavily Democratic. A vacancy would likely lead to a scramble in the Democratic primary but not a competitive general election.
