Lugar to Vote ‘Yes’ on Kagan Confirmation

Sen. Dick Lugar (Ind.) Wednesday announced that he will vote to confirm Solicitor General Elena Kagan as the next Supreme Court justice, becoming the second Republican to endorse her nomination.

In a statement released by his office, Lugar said Kagan is fit to serve on the high court.

“I have concluded that Solicitor General Elena Kagan is clearly qualified to serve on the Supreme Court and that she has demonstrated a comprehensive knowledge of court history and decisions,” he said. “I believe that she has had a distinguished career in both education and public service and is well regarded by the legal community and her peers.

“I will vote to confirm Solicitor General Elena Kagan’s nomination to serve as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States,” he added.

In announcing his support, Lugar joins fellow Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.), who voted in favor of her nomination during Tuesday’s Judiciary Committee vote; he was the only Republican on the panel to vote yes. The Senate is expected to confirm Kagan before it adjourns for a monthlong recess Aug. 6.

Like Graham, Lugar also supported Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s installment to the Supreme Court last year.
