Pelosi Fires Back at GOP’s Calls for Repeal: ‘We’re Not Going Back’

Speaker Nancy Pelosi is in full campaign mode, and she has settled on her catchphrase: “We’re not going back.”

The California Democrat used the phrase numerous times Thursday at her weekly press conference as she ripped into Republicans and touted Democratic accomplishments, targeting GOP leaders’ insistence on repealing health care reform and financial regulatory reform.

“They would repeal, repeal, repeal or apologize,” she said.

“We’re not going back to the failed policies of the Bush administration,” she said.

She accused Republicans of trying to privatize Social Security and complained they insisted that unemployment benefits — but not tax cuts for the rich — be paid for.

Pelosi also stood firm against proposals from Republicans and some Democrats that tax cuts for the wealthy that are set to expire at the end of the year be extended. She said those Bush-era tax cuts failed to create jobs.

She also said she did not regret passing a sweeping cap-and-trade energy bill last year even though the Senate appears incapable of passing anything similar. She said she looks forward to taking the House bill into conference with the Senate.
