Steele a ‘Disaster’ as Head of RNC, Rollins Says

Republican strategist Ed Rollins called Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele a washout as party leader.

“Michael Steele has failed miserably,” Rollins said Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” noting the RNC’s dismal fundraising numbers and inability to articulate a message for the upcoming midterm election.

“Obviously, he’s been a disaster,” Rollins said.

Still, Rollins said he didn’t believe Steele would make a material difference in the midterm election. Rollins pointed to another “Face the Nation” guest, Ed Gillespie, and Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, both former RNC chairmen, as picking up the party mantle by raising money to get Republicans the resources they need to pick up seats in November.

Rollins’ long GOP résumé includes a stint in Ronald Reagan’s administration and serving as national campaign chairman for Mike Huckabee’s presidential bid.
