HOH’s One-Minute Recess: Building Hope

The first couple of country music will salute a former presidential first couple — President Jimmy Carter and wife Rosalynn Carter — next month at a gala honoring the Carters’ decades of work with Habitat for Humanity.

Country superstars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood are co-chairmen of “Thanks a Million! A salute to the life and service of our most famous volunteers — Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter,” scheduled for Oct. 4 at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan will appear as a guest speaker, and officials from Home Depot, the Dow Chemical Co. and Lowe’s are also serving as co-chairmen of the soiree.

The Carters first got involved with Habitat for Humanity in 1984 and have led projects to build and renovate homes around the country ever since.

Oct. 4 is World Habitat Day, and the Carters will spend the week after the gala leading 1,100 volunteers to build 86 homes in six U.S. cities, including D.C. and Baltimore.

Overheard on the Hill

“Colbert, may I suggest Utah’s Third as the host district for Restoring Truthiness …”

— Rep. Jason Chaffetz in a Tuesday tweet. The Utah Republican, who leg-wrestled with the TV host back in 2009 for the Better Know a District segment on “The Colbert Report,” invited Colbert to bring his Glenn Beck parody rally to Utah.
