Boehner to Host Speaker’ Fundraiser Next Week
House Minority Leader John Boehner may be dialing back talk of becoming Speaker next year. But that has not stopped him from trying to raise money off the prospect.
The Ohio Republican is hosting a fundraiser Wednesday for his joint fundraising committee “Boehner for Speaker.” The event, at the Capitol Hill restaurant Cava, has a suggested individual contribution of $2,500, according to a copy of the invitation obtained by Roll Call. Boehner has previously solicited contributions of up to $37,800, the maximum allowed by federal law.
The committee had raised about $566,000 at the end of April, according to Federal Election Commission. According to a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, Boehner has raised more than $2 million to date.
Boehner was reluctant earlier this week to talk about his future when pressed at a news conference on his plans if Republicans win the majority in November.
“I think it’s all a bit premature,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do in order to earn the majority back, but if we’re able to earn the majority back, we want to do so to renew our efforts for a smaller, less costly, and more accountable government here in Washington, D.C.”
