Boehner Calls Victory a Rejection of Democratic Agenda

Presumptive Speaker John Boehner said Wednesday the midterm election results that will bring a wave of Republicans to Washington are a referendum on the Democratic agenda.

“I think it’s pretty clear the Obama-Pelosi agenda is being rejected by the American people,” the Ohio Republican said during a Wednesday morning news conference, referring to President Barack Obama and outgoing Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.).

“As I said last night, they want their government to change course.”

Boehner and his top lieutenant, Rep. Eric Cantor (Va.), were light on legislative specifics the morning after they won the majority in the House after four years of Democratic rule.

“The results of last night indicate the American people are tired and frustrated with Washington,” Cantor said. “It is very clear they want a government that listens to them, and frankly whether you are a Republican, Democrat or Independent, the people of this country want to see results.”

Still, Boehner did not provide specific examples of how Republicans will address what they see as a mandate to reduce the size of government.

“We’ll make a lot of decisions over the coming months about what will happen in January,” he said.

Boehner did say health care would be a top target in the 112th Congress.

“The American people are concerned about the government takeover of health care,” he said. “I think it’s important for us to lay the groundwork before we begin to repeal this monstrosity, replacing it with common-sense reforms that will bring down the cost of government.”
