The 12-member jury in the retrial of former House-aide-turned-lobbyist Kevin Ring indicated Wednesday that it has deadlocked although deliberations continue, the Associated Press reported.

The jury, which began deliberations Thursday but did not meet Monday, informed U.S. District Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle of its status in a note Wednesday, the AP reported.

The jurors also asked for advice on how to determine whether gifts given to public officials are illegal. According to the AP, Huvelle told the jurors to determine whether such gifts were given with a corrupt intent, but said, “It isn’t simple.”

Ring was indicted in 2008 on public corruption charges stemming from the investigation of his former boss, lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Ring stood trial on the same charges in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in 2009, but Huvelle declared a mistrial when jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict.
