Edith Childs, the Democrat who inspired Barack Obama’s “Fired up! Ready to go!” campaign chant, is tired of the bickering in Washington, D.C.

Childs told Roll Call in an interview that she continues to support Obama for president and offered an early endorsement for his 2012 re-election bid.

“I think he’s been a good president,” Childs told Roll Call from her home in Greenwood, S.C., on Friday. “He could do better if he had more support from everybody. If you’ve got your foot on my neck, neither one of us can go play, so what are you going to accomplish?”

She said she occasionally hears from the White House — she got an invitation to one of Obama’s Christmas parties last winter — and would be thrilled if the president uses her story on the campaign trail as he did so frequently in 2007 and 2008.

Childs scoffed at voters who think Obama hasn’t changed the country, citing the new health care law as an example of a major policy overhaul.

“My granddaughter can stay on her parent’s insurance until she’s 26,” Childs said. “That’s change.”

Even though her Election Day went well — she won a fifth term as a member of the Greenwood County Council — Childs said she was depressed and disappointed that Republicans won back control in the House, thanks in part to unseating Rep. John Spratt from her home state.

“A politician can promise you the world, and people are looking at a quick fix where there is no quick fix,” she said.
