As House Democrats prepare to deal with slashed budgets in the minority, Caucus Chairman John Larson (D-Conn.) has asked for the resignations of his entire staff.

“It’s a routine reorganization,” Larson aide Chris Barnes said. “It looks like the budget is going to shrink.”

Barnes confirmed that Larson has not asked for resignations in the past, mainly because it wasn’t necessary.

“We’ve never had a contraction before,” Barnes said. “There’s an anticipation that everyone gets less.”

It’s unclear how big of a budget Democrats will have in the minority because Republicans have pledged to cut Congress’ expenses. Democrats in leadership will further feel the pinch because they recently added another leadership position, the No. 3 spot for Rep. James Clyburn (S.C.).

A source close to Clyburn said that it was unclear where the funding for his budget would come from and that it wouldn’t necessarily come from the Caucus chairman’s budget.

“This is a good news, bad news situation,” Barnes said, noting that some staff might want to move around to other offices.
