Rep. Jared Polis is going Dumpster-diving.

The Colorado Democrat hosted a screening of the documentary “Dive!” at the Capitol Visitor Center on Tuesday night. The award-winning film follows a filmmaker/Dumpster-diver as he studies how much food Americans waste.

Polis tells HOH that he plans to dive into the food waste issue legislatively in the next Congress. But he’s also taking a less metaphoric plunge. As part of his research, in January he’ll take his staff Dumpster-diving, which essentially involves digging through trash bins behind grocery stores looking for thrown-out food that’s still edible.

“It will be cold, but that will mean the food is well-preserved,” Polis jokes.

Polis calls “Dive!” a “terrific movie that really showcases something most people don’t really think about.” Polis’ partner, Marlon Reis, also attended, accompanied by the couple’s dog, terrier mix Gia.

“She’s very excited. She really begged to see the movie today,” Polis says.

Congressional spouse Elizabeth Kucinich, wife of Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), sat with Reis during the screening. She spoke afterward in her capacity as director of public affairs for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, alongside former Rep. Dan Glickman (D-Kan.).

Glickman noted that his credentials as a former secretary of Agriculture and ex-head of the Motion Picture Association of America qualified him to speak on both the subject of the film and its creative merit.

“I think it’s a very good documentary,” Glickman says.
