Cochran Says Hes Still Evaluating START
Sen. Thad Cochran insisted Monday that he hasn’t made up his mind about the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, despite what he said were Democratic claims that he’s supportive of it.
The Mississippi Republican said he had heard that Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) told reporters that Cochran had decided to back the pact. But Cochran said he was still in the process of “listening carefully and trying to evaluate the issue,” and has yet to make a decision on how he will vote.
“I saw that comment attributed to the Senator from New York,” he said. “I don’t recall making any such statement.”
A vote on ratification of START is likely to happen by week’s end. Sixty-seven votes are required for ratification.
