Senate Approves CR, Shortens To-Do List

Updated: 3:54 p.m.

The Senate voted 79-16 on Tuesday to fund the federal government through March 4, clearing one of the last major pieces of legislation on this year’s agenda.

The continuing resolution now moves to the House for approval later in the day. The current CR expires at midnight.

The Senate also voted to confirm a pair of district court nominees. William Joseph Martinez was confirmed 58-37, and Bernita Pearson was confirmed 56-39. The chamber has so far cleared 14 judicial nominees during the lame-duck session, and 22 remain pending.

Senators now move toward completion of the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty and a bill providing health care to 9/11 first responders. Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is hoping to wrap up Senate business sometime Wednesday.
