A California man was arrested Wednesday morning and accused of threatening Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) last month, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported.
 
Charles Turner Habermann, 32, was charged in federal court in California with threatening a federal official. Authorities said the resident of Palm Springs admitted calling McDermott because he was angry about taxes. However, Habermann told them he wouldn’t risk losing his $3 million trust fund by attacking the lawmaker, authorities said.

He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Two Dec. 9 phone calls to McDermott’s Seattle office threatened to kill the lawmaker’s friends and family and to put McDermott “in the trash,” according to charging documents.

Habermann was contacted the next day and allegedly admitted threatening McDermott and a lawmaker identified in court documents as “Congresswoman C.P.”

“I have full confidence in the law enforcement agencies handling the case and remain focused on serving my constituents,” McDermott said in a statement Wednesday. He declined to further discuss the case.

FBI Special Agent Dean Giboney told the court that Habermann was investigated in March after making similar threats against a member of the California State Assembly.

Habermann told authorities at the time that he was high on medical marijuana, according to charging documents. He was issued a warning.
