Campus Notebook: CPR Training on Hill Honors Giffords

The American Red Cross provided free lifesaving training Wednesday on Capitol Hill in honor of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Alongside the Arizona Democrat’s staff, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Reps. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) participated in a morning session.

“It was nice to have leaders and staff here,” said Connie Harvey, the health and safety expert for the Red Cross who led the training sessions. “Everybody did a great job wanting to learn. They all took it very seriously — they know how important it is.”

Attendees learned how to administer hands-only CPR and how to stop external bleeding. Both techniques were instrumental in saving lives after the shooting and assassination attempt on Giffords in Tucson, Ariz. Giffords intern Daniel Hernandez, who reacted quickly at the scene and used similar first aid training, probably helped saved the Congresswoman’s life.

Also in Giffords’ honor, the Red Cross will host similar training courses in first aid and CPR at more than 100 locations across the country for its “Save-a-Life Saturday” this weekend.
