Michael Clark Announces Bid for Connecticut House Seat

A former FBI agent has joined to race to replace Senate candidate Rep. Chris Murphy in Connecticut’s 5th district.

Michael Clark (R), a 22-year veteran of the FBI who is now retired, launched a campaign earlier in the week, according to NBC Connecticut. He joins a Republican field that already includes Justin Bernier, a member of former Gov. M. Jodi Rell’s cabinet.

“I am running for Congress because I love and respect this country and am proud to serve it,” Clark said in a statement obtained by NBC Connecticut. “I believe we need a smaller, more efficient government that delivers core services to its citizens and respects the fact that we are a nation founded on free market principles.”

The Democratic field has been slow to take shape, but the region is generally considered more competitive than other parts of the Nutmeg State, which is dominated by Democrats. The shape of the district, however, could very well change as part of the redistricting process.

Should he win a seat in Congress, Clark would likely find an ally in Rep. Michael Grimm (R-N.Y.), who previously served as a special agent with the FBI.
