President Barack Obama sent a letter to federal employees thanking them for enduring days of anxiety during the budget crisis that was resolved just in time to avert a government shutdown.

“I know the past few weeks have been a time of uncertainty and concern for you and your families, but your patience and professionalism throughout this entire period have affirmed my confidence in you, and everyone who works in our Government,” Obama wrote Monday in the two-paragraph letter, obtained by Roll Call through an administration source.

“You do your jobs without complaint or much recognition. But it is men and women like you who help make America all it is, by responding to the needs of our people, and keeping our country safe and secure,” the president wrote.

As negotiations went down to the wire Friday night, West Wing staffers were kept up to date with memos asking for their patience. They were asked to check email throughout the evening for details on whether the government would shut down.
