Sherrod Brown Has $2.5 Million in the Bank

Sen. Sherrod Brown raised $1.3 million for his re-election bid in the first quarter of this year.

Those funds mean the Ohio Democrat has $2.5 million on hand as he embarks on his campaign for a second term, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

National Republicans have indicated they will target Brown this cycle, and just last week, the first major GOP candidate filed his paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to get into the race. State Treasurer Josh Mandel opened a campaign account to run for the seat, although his spokesman stopped short of saying he was ready to announce his bid.

“Over the past couple months Treasurer Mandel has received an enormous amount of encouragement from conservatives and business leaders throughout Ohio and across the country,” Mandel spokesman Anthony Conchel told Roll Call. “Josh has been flattered by this draft movement and thought the right thing to do was to open up a campaign committee to take a more serious look at the race.”

At least one other Buckeye State Republican is looking at running against Brown: Former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, who lost a gubernatorial bid in 2006, has indicated he is interested in the seat. A phone message left for Blackwell seeking comment Monday was not returned.

Roll Call Politics rates this race Leans Democratic.
