First Democrat Enters Open 1st District New Mexico Race

New Mexico state Sen. Eric Griego (D) made his Congressional campaign official over the weekend in a video posted to his campaign website.

Griego is running for the Albuquerque-based 1st district that Rep. Martin Heinrich (D) is giving up to run for Senate. Depending on what happens in redistricting, this has the potential to be among the top battleground districts in the country.

“I’m running for Congress because we need bold leadership who will stand up to the misguided policies of the current Republican leadership,” he said in a statement on his newly unveiled website.

Among the several Democrats looking at the race are state Rep. Moe Maestas and Terry Brunner, Sen. Jeff Bingaman’s former chief of staff. On the GOP side, Albuquerque City Councilor Dan Lewis is running, and former state Rep. Janice Arnold-Jones has formed an exploratory committee. She is expected to announce a final decision on the race by the end of this month.
