A new Nevada Senate poll offered nothing to change Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-Nev.) mind about which Democrat has the best chance to defeat appointed Sen. Dean Heller (R) next year.

The auto-dial poll from GOP firm Magellan Data and Mapping Strategies found Rep. Shelley Berkley (D) taking 46 percent and Heller 44 percent, while businessman Byron Georgiou (D) took just 33 percent to Heller’s 46 percent.

But the discrepancy in Berkley’s and Georgiou’s numbers can be attributed to Georgiou’s lack of name recognition. Forty-six percent of respondents said they had never heard of him. Berkley and Heller, longtime elected officials in the state, both had at least 88 percent name recognition.

Recent comments from Reid have made it clear he would like Georgiou to leave the race, and Democratic sources in Nevada said that is because Reid does not believe Georgiou can win the general. Picking up the seat next year could help Democrats hold their Senate majority — and Reid keep his post as majority leader.

The survey of 720 registered voters was conducted June 21-22 with a 3.65-point margin of error.
