Marin County Supervisor Susan Adams announced Wednesday that she will run for the open Northern California seat of retiring Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D).

“I’ll bring my healthcare expertise to Congress to keep patients, nurses and doctors in charge of healthcare decisions, not insurance company bureaucrats,” Adams, a registered nurse practitioner, said in a statement. “My job will be to expand my philosophy of ‘Healthy Planet-Healthy People’ by creating green jobs and growing our economy and by addressing a full range of health care issues in our new Congressional district.”

Adams joins a Democratic primary field that already includes Assemblymember Jared Huffman and North Bay political activist Norman Solomon. Woolsey announced late last month that she would not seek another term.

Under the first proposed map by the state’s independent redistricting commission, the district, currently based in Marin and Sonoma counties, would extend from the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge up the coast to the Oregon border. The change would do little to alter the district’s heavy Democratic lean.

“While the politicians in Sacramento and Washington bicker about Congressional boundaries, I’m preparing my run for Congress because for me, the people of Northern California always come first,” Adams said. “Let’s bring fresh ideas and new energy to Congress.”
