Veteran Manan Trivedi might have some company in his quest for the Democratic nod to challenge Rep. Jim Gerlach (R-Pa.) next year.

Doug Pike, who came within 714 votes of defeating Trivedi last year, told Roll Call he is “seriously” looking at another bid.

“I’m seriously considering running again for Congress,” Pike, a former newspaper editorial writer, said in a brief phone interview.

Pike’s comments come just a couple of days after Trivedi officially announced he would run against Gerlach a second time. Pike’s interest means Democrats could have a contentious and expensive primary in that district for a second cycle. Trivedi narrowly defeated Pike in the 2010 primary, but he lost to Gerlach by 14 points in the general election.

How state legislators redraw the Congressional map later this year could throw both Democrats’ plans out of whack. Republicans control the mapmaking process in Pennsylvania and will likely look for a way to shore up Republicans in Gerlach’s competitive House district by shifting around his southeastern Pennsylvania territory. Gerlach defeated Trivedi easily last year, but he’s only slipped by with a slim margin of victory in previous cycles.
