On Friday morning, President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign staffers (@BarackObama) took to Twitter to urge Americans to contact their Republican Members of Congress in support of a debt ceiling compromise.

Unfortunately for them, it looks like they also gave the GOP the mother of all “Follow Fridays.”

The campaign team began tweeting after Obama urged Americans to email, call and tweet GOP Members.

It then began tweeting GOP Members’ Twitter accounts (alphabetically by state, no less), and like magic, the Republican lawmakers’ followers grew and grew and grew, while the campaign’s numbers plunged.

“How 2 thank u 4 all the new followers 2day?” a grateful Rep. Bill Johnson tweeted just before 5 p.m. The Ohio Republican wasn’t won over by a few extra Twitter besties because he will still not be voting for the president’s “secret plan.”

“It’s been a great Follow Friday,” Senate Republican Conference spokesman Nick Simpson tells HOH. “The Senate Republicans appreciate the new Twitter followers and look forward to talking with them about ways to reduce government spending.”

Simpson says that by the time the Obama campaign started tweeting the South Dakota Republican Twitter handles, Republicans had seen an uptick of about 5,000 followers across their Twitter accounts.

The Obama campaign, on the other hand, jettisoned nearly 10,000 followers throughout the day.

Oh, social media, how fickle thou art.
