Former Sen. George LeMieux (R-Fla.), running to get his old job back in 2012, picked up the endorsement of Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R).

“George is a solid conservative who served the people of Florida well in the U.S. Senate. I am happy to lend my support to his campaign,” Barbour said in a statement released by LeMieux’s campaign Monday.

Barbour is a former Republican National Committee chairman who began the cycle in the 2012 presidential mix. He is also a former prominent Washington, D.C.-based lobbist and has a highly sought-after national fundraising Rolodex that could prove helpful for LeMieux.

In the GOP primary to take on Sen. Bill Nelson (D), LeMieux faces former Florida House Majority Leader Adam Hasner, former Ruth’s Chris Steak House CEO Craig Miller, and retired Army Col. Mike McCalister.

A Quinnipiac University poll released last week showed Nelson with a large lead over all of his potential GOP opponents, none of whom are well-known statewide. The poll also showed Nelson’s approval rating at 46 percent, a figure that tied his all-time low in a Quinnipiac survey.
