Maria Sheffield, a losing candidate for insurance commissioner in 2010, is moving toward a bid for Georgia’s 12th district, which was made substantially more Republican under the new GOP-drawn map.

“I am humbled that Republican, Tea Party, business, and local community and government leaders have reached out to me,” Sheffield said in a statement. “Over the next few weeks, my husband Scott and I will pray about this opportunity to serve the people of Georgia.”

Rep. John Barrow, who was drawn out the 12th but plans to run for re-election there, is considered one of the most vulnerable Democratic Members. So it’s no surprise that four candidates are already running for the GOP nomination in the district. Businessman Rick Allen and state Rep. Lee Anderson are considered the two top-tier candidates.

The current district voted 54 percent for President Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election, and the new district would have voted just less than 60 percent for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).
